Lou Gehrig’s disease or ALS is considered a chronic degenerative neurological illness associated with the selective loss of only those nerve cells needed for muscular motion located in the brain and spinal cord.
Amyotrophic, derived from ancient Greek, translates into no-muscle-nourishment, respectively. “Lateral” refers to muscles on either side of the affected nerve, and “sclerosis” means hardening. Without nourishment, a muscle wastes away and with it so does the ability to initiate movements.
