The ECB system is present in the kidney where it is involved in controlling various renal functions with important therapeutic implications. Increased CB1 receptor activity contributes to kidney hemodynamic abnormalities and dysfunction, whereas CB1 receptor blockade may attenuate and delay these changes. Additionally, non-psychoactive CB2 receptor agonists may offer therapeutic benefit in attenuating kidney injury and promoting tissue repair in DN- and obesity-induced renal damage.
