Cannabis is emerging from the shadows of prohibition. Every week, there are advancements in many fields related to cannabis. Cannabis Reports will be re-capping the weekly events of the cannabis community and industry, so that you can stay up-to-date on the latest developments.

Happy New Year

Cannabis Reports is excited for 2016 and the opportunities for the cannabis community to further progress. We recently looked back at the events of 2015 to appreciate how lucky we all are to be a part of the cannabis movement. You can read about our team growth, platform development, and general cannabis news that all took place during the past year.

For 2016, we kicked the year off with a name change from Smoke Reports to Cannabis Reports. Great new name, still the most advanced cannabis technology.

NY Begins Medical Cannabis Program

New York’s Compassionate Care Act was signed in July 2014. On Thursday, January 7th, nearly 18 months later, the first licensed dispensary is opening its doors to cannabis patients. The state has only licensed five businesses for cannabis operations, for a total of 20 retail locations. Those critical of the cannabis program in New York point to the evident bottleneck surrounding safe access to medical cannabis.

Cannabis flowers were explicitly forbidden for medical use. Patients in New York will only have access to methods and forms of consumption approved by the Commissioner of the cannabis program. Additionally, patients and caregivers can only possess a “30 day supply” of medicine, and can only acquire new medicine during the final week of that monthly refill period.

CA Deputy Arrested for Cross-Country Cannabis Trafficking

On December 29th, Yuba County Deputy Christopher M. Heath was arrested in York County, Pennsylvania. The California police officer is charged along with two other men for transporting nearly 250 pounds of cannabis flowers (estimated at over $2 million) from California to the West Manheim Township in Pennsylvania.

The three men were released on bail after being charged with trafficking the cannabis in two large pick-up trucks. Heath was in possession of his police issued handgun during the cross-country trip. The bail for all three men was one million dollars, raising questions of how a sheriff’s deputy could so quickly afford to post that amount.
